3 Alternatives to a Receiving Line

Want to welcome all of your wedding guests (hey, you invited them for a reason!), but you’d prefer to skip the traditional receiving line? I get it! Kevin and I had a receiving line for our wedding and, while I loved being able to welcome everyone individually, it took much longer than we expected. In hindsight, another option may have been a better fit for us. To prevent you from wondering the same thing, here are three other options to consider:

Dismiss Guests by Row

After your grand exit from the ceremony, loop back around and greet everyone as they leave their seats, one row at a time. While this is very similar to the traditional receiving line, it tends to move along because guests are more aware of everyone else still waiting to congratulate you!

Greet guests during dinner

As the happy couple, you have the honor of eating first, which means you’ll likely be finished before many of your guests. Use the downtime before toasts to move from table to table, welcoming your family and friends! You’ll be well-fed and they’ll be thrilled to see you. :)

Photo race with dinner tables

If you want to amp things up a notch, plan to take a photo with each table at your reception - but with a twist! Coordinate ahead of time with your photographer and band or DJ, as they’ll help make the race come to life; give your guests a heads up that you’ll be coming around to say hello, and encourage them to creatively plan a pose for a quick photo with their table. Give them a few moments to plan, cue the music, and try to get through all your tables in two or three songs. The time limit and music get the adrenaline flowing and make everyone feel invested in your success - I guarantee you’ll have a lot of laughs! I’ve seen everything from tables that make hats out of napkins and newspapers to those who make signs or pick up the bride!
