Benefits of a First Look

Before diving in, I want to acknowledge that a first look may not be for everyone, and that’s okay. No one should force you to see each other before the ceremony if that isn’t what you want. But, if you are considering a first look and want to know more about what should go in that “pro” column on your pros and cons list, you’re in the right place!

When photos are an important aspect of your wedding, a first look is an effective way to prioritize getting great images with less stress. Here are a few of my favorite reasons why:

  1. Have more time with your fiance

You’ll get to see your favorite person as soon as you’re dressed and ready to get things rolling - what could be better than that? By choosing to do a first look, no one needs to hide or worry about coordinating where you’ll be vs where your fiance will be at a certain time. Plus, you get the entire day together, rather than only post-ceremony time. For me, doing a first look helped calm my nerves because I got to see Kevin right away; we were able to drive to the ceremony space together and even had time to stop for ice cream on the way!

2. Get two WOW moments

Walking down the aisle and seeing the expression on your fiance’s face as you approach is a core memory that every bride should have. Fortunately, a first look doesn’t have to take away from the emotion of that moment; instead, you’ll literally be right next to your partner the initial time they see you. You’ll be able to enjoy a moment to just be together.

I didn’t think I’d be super emotional when we got married, so I was surprised when I basically sobbed my entire walk down the aisle - especially since we had chosen to do a first look earlier! Looking back, I feel like I gained an additional core memory from that first look, but was able to relish in all the emotions from the start of our ceremony.

3. Take photos when you feel your best

As amazing as your wedding is bound to be, I’ll bet you five bucks that you’ll be pretty tired when all is said and done! A first look allows you to take the majority of your photos when you feel the most beautiful and excited for the day. You’ll be fresh out of hair and makeup - our Midwestern humidity won’t stand a chance against a photographer who has the opportunity to do portraits and wedding party photos before the ceremony. :) Plus, you can feel more relaxed during photos because you won’t have well-intentioned guests pulling you in five directions at once.

4. Have more time with your guests

When your portraits - along with family and wedding party photos - take place after the ceremony, they need to all be squeezed in during cocktail hour…which means you’re missing out on quality time with your guests! A first look ensures you won’t feel rushed or stressed about photos during that time. You’ll be able to mingle with your loved ones and even grab a cocktail to enjoy before dinner.
